Libya is located in the middle of the north African
coast of the Mediterranean . It vast area is
extending until the highs of north and centre of the
African continent, bordered from east by Egypt, and
from south Sudan, Chad and Niger, and from west
Algeria and Tunisia, and between longitudinal lines
9 and 25 degrees east, and transversal lines 18.25
and 33 degrees north.
Area:
Libya is distinguished with its vast area, where it
reaches about 1,750,000 km2, coming in the fourth
rank regarding area, as to the African countries.
Its beach length overlooking the Mediterranean sea
reaches about two thousand km.
Population:
The population census in Libya reaches about
5,484.426 (five million four hundred eighty four
thousand four hundred twenty six) inhabitants, as
per the 2002 census.
Climatic Conditions:
The climate of the most Libyan territories is
distinguished with dryness with a big difference in
temperature. The area of Great Sahara in the south
and the Mediterranean sea in the north are
considered the main factors determining the climate
in the country. In the coastal area, the winter
season is considered moderate, despite the fall of
snow in some high area sometimes. The temperature
average does not decrease more than 5 Celsius
degrees, where the summer season is considered hot
relatively where the temperature reaches the maximum
average in August and the monthly temperature
average does not exceed 30 Celsius degrees
throughout that period. No rains in summer. In the
mountain areas, such as Eljabel Elgharbi or Eljabel
Elakhdar, the height and nearness of the sea have an
effect on the temperature average.
As to the desert area (
Sahara
), the temperature average throughout the year doe
not exceed 30 Celsius degrees, during summer, and 5C
degrees during the winter.
Whereas the rainfall is considered not common in the
desert areas, sometimes there are rain storms, yet
snow falls sometimes. In general, Libya is
distinguished with moderate climate featured with
variety from Mediterranean climate in the coast, to
desert climate in the south, which makes it an
attractive factor and an important constituent among
those of the tourism industry.
As to the climate seasons and tourist seasons, it
may divide the country onto four distinct areas.

Relief:
The Libyan territories include several relief
distinct and different units, which may be
determined into three main extents containing, each
thereof, a set of relief units similar some how, it
its forms and geomorphologic factors responsible
thereof. They are:
• Coast plains extent: Jefara plain, Elkhoms plain,
Misurata plain, Benghazi plain, Sirte plain, eastern
plains.
• North highs extent: Eljabel Elgharbi, Eljabel
Elakhdar, Butnan and Defna hill.
Desert extent:
• Hills: Elhamada Elhamra hill.
• North sinkages: Jaghboub sinkage, Ugla, Jalu and
Ajekhra sinkage, Murada sinkage.
• Basins: Ubari basin, Merzuq basin, Elkufra basin.
• Mountains: Suda mountain, Elharuj mountain,
Tebesti mountain, Awinat mounts, Akakus mountain.
• Valleys: Eshati valley, Elhayat valley.
• Sand surfaces and Sarrir (beds).
Based on what is above stated, Libya is
distinguished with huge diversity in natural
landscapes resulting from the multiplicity of its
relief aspects, which is considered one of the most
important tourist attraction.
