The Libyan Mountain Ranges
Jabel Nafousa (the Nafousa mountain range) is in the
northwestern region of Libya and terminates as an extension of a
mountain chain crossing the border into Algeria. It accommodates
a number of historical villages that were built a long time ago
into the rocks of the mountains, overlooking the lowlands
beneath. Natural beauty in these highlands is latent in the vast
area of the Jfara plain that separates the seashore from the
crooked mountain range. This fact is reflected in turn on the
flora and fauna vitae where greenery is scarce and water is
little.
The architecture, local culture, way of life and the beauty of
nature are some of the most important attractions that captures
the interests and curiosity of tourists and travelers to the
region.
Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar (the “Green Mountains”), situated in the
northeastern region, embraces the Mediterranean so closely to
provide a highly enjoyable climate. This helped grow a rich
variety of mountain crops and fruit trees such as olives,
almonds, figs as well as palm trees.
Some virgin unexplored parts of the mountains meeting the sea in
the Green Mountains could be as wonderful and charming as some
tropical forests or Hawaiian backdrops.
Situated in the middle of the Libyan land is the chain of the
Black Harouj Mountains, which took its name from its dark rocks,
blackened by the eruptions of ancient volcanoes that existed
there thousands of years ago.
In the southwestern region of Libya there are the Tadrart Akakus
mountains which are considered to be one of the most important
historical sites for its rich treasures of pre-historical
paintings and engravings.
Close to the Egyptian and Sudanese borders with Libya, in the
southeastern region of Libya are the Al-Awaynat and Arkno
mountains each of which also contains prehistoric paintings
similar to those found in the Tadrart Akakus mountains. Al-Awaynat
mountains are also the authentic place of the real story on
which the famous movie “The English Patient” was based.
